Borders Heritage Festival - Sounding out the Past - Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Sounding out the Past concert performance by Scottish Chamber Orchestra and local school pupils, Victoria Hall, Selkirk at 6.30pm
“Sounding Out the Past” is a new music commission for the Borders Heritage Festival 2017 inspired by the theme “Borders - Where People Place and Myth Meet” which has been an innovative way of celebrating and interpreting the built and natural heritage of specific houses in the Scottish Borders.  Composer, Suzanne Parry, Borders based writer, Jules Horne and a graduate student from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra worked with four classes of primary school children from two rural schools in the Yarrow and Ettrick valleys and two schools in Selkirk and Galashiels. They explored the history and stories connected to three historic Borders houses and their estates:
Abbotsford House, known as home of iconic Scottish writer, Sir Walter Scott,
Aikwood Tower, a 500 year old Border Peel Tower, which was restored by former MP, Lord David Steel and his wife Judy in the 1980s.
Bowhill House and Estate, the family home of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry.
Suzanne Parry has created together with writer Jules Horne and the pupils from Galashiels, Selkirk, Yarrow and Ettrick Valleys a multi-movement Song Cycle which will be played by an ensemble of SCO musicians - clarinet, violin, cello and voice. The subject is drawn from the childrens’ explorations of the three historic houses and their grounds, drawing on existing writing and stories associated with the three historic houses.
