About the British Music Experience - BME

The British Music Experience is the UK’s Museum of Popular Music – a place where visitors can use an interactive audio visual guide and relive the moments that helped put British music on the map. After a five-year run at The O2, London, the BME is now proudly open on Liverpool waterfront in the iconic Cunard Building.

Boasting an unrivalled collection of stage outfits, objects and instruments (including Noel Gallagher’s Union Jack Guitar), the BME charts the beginnings, rise and influence of British pop from 1945 through the rise of Skiffle Music, the influence of Buddy Holly and of course the Beatles to the present day. In addition to an incredible collection of artefacts and memorabilia ¬– which includes some of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust costumes and the original handwritten lyrics to ‘Blue Monday’ – the BME also covers the impact that British music had on the culture, fashion (the unbelievably tiny dresses worn by the Spice Girls!), art and politics of the time. There are many displays which become even more real when you see lots of the music statues and venues in the city itself there’s a tremendous display of outfits worn by Queen and your guide will explain how and why Freddie Mercury stayed in the Liverpool during the 60’s.

The BME includes galleries, learning zones, audio visual experiences including an awesome full size Hologram of Boy George on stage, you can play Gibson and other guitars and record music in an interactive instrument studio. There is also a dance area and a live music venue.

There will be lots of time to visit the souvenir shop filled with the best of music merchandise and there is a fabulous café overlooking the famous River Mersey.

About your Magical History Tour & BME experience.

Your Beatles and British Music Experience starts with a photo at the brand new lifelike statues of the Beatles in front of the iconic waterfront buildings. Your Tour Guide will point out the “Ferry cross the Mersey” its Dazzle Ship design was by Sir Peter Blake who designed the cover for the Sergeant Pepper Album.

Next your tour guide will take you to the Museum of Liverpool for an 8 minute panoramic Beatles film with Beatles songs

Next its Halfway to Paradise in the Albert Docks to see the Billy Fury statue, here you will learn about the impresario Larry Parnes who signed people like Joe Brown, Billy Fury and Vince Eager and how the Beatles ended up supporting another one of his acts with a lot less intimidating name Johnny Gentle! Later in the day you will enjoy the fabulous display relating to Larry Parnes’s stable in the BME.

Next you’ll be guided through the rejuvenated town centre passing the Queen Victoria Monument to Castle Street and the Town Hall with its balcony where the Beatles made their homecoming after their world tour in 1964. You’ll see a plaque outside the former venue of the Iron Door Club the venue for the Beatles and “the Silver Beetles”, the Searchers and Freddie Starr.

You’ll see the brand new £1 billion shopping area called Liverpool One and the former site of Brian Epstein’s record store NEMS (North End Music Stores) and enjoy the Eleanor Rigby which was sculpted by another one of Larry Parnes’ stable; Tommy Steele who sold it to Liverpool for the princely sum of Half a Sixpence!

Next it's Mathew Street the home of the famous Eric’s club which was another membership only venue and over the years has played host to many local and international bands such as Elvis Costello, the Clash, Ultravox and OMD.

Next it’s the Cilla Black Statue outside the Cavern Club where the Beatles played 292 times from 1961 to 1963 and where should you choose to visit you can still hear live Beatles songs played most afternoons.

Now is time to take everything you’ve seen and touched in the City Centre inside the fabulous British Museum Experience. The guided tour outside will transform your time in the BME as your expert music guide will already have pointed out their favourite exhibits and how they relate to the overall British Music Story. Your guide will also ask you about your interests and your day out will be an extremely personal tour and they will help you plan the rest of your time in Liverpool City Region and suggest what else you might like to see during your stay.

All guests will be given a free map of Liverpool City Centre.
