One orchestra - One soloist - One conductor - One magnificent programme

CSO invites you to walk beneath Italian skies in an exhilarating evening of musical landscapes and orchestral colour.

The flamboyance of Rossini’s Thieving Magpie was used to memorable effect in the film A Clockwork Orange, its anarchic themes mirroring the lawless extravagance of the mischievous bird. This narrative of rebellion against an overzealous state continues through an excursion to Russia. Shostakovich’s first Violin Concerto was written in 1947, concealing hidden messages of darkness, defiance and redemption, but was suppressed until 1955 for fear of reprisals under the Stalinist regime.

The music returns to Italy, with Respighi’s symphonic poems describing the passing of a Roman day from tumbling waters at dawn to ghostly legions fading into dusk.
