Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fawr) is the most easterly of Black Mountains hills. Though modest in height (486m), it is steeped in history and legend, with magnificent views. We begin on the Beacons Way by lanes and fields before starting the main ascent through woodland and then the fine ridge to the summit – where there will be time for tales and hopefully a grand vista. Returning towards Abergavenny, we take in our bonus hill, Little Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fach). This used to be tree-covered, but after a recent tonsure, its open top gives fine views of the whole sweep of the Usk valley. A steady descent leads back to the town.

Directions to start
From CRiC take the A40 to Abergavenny. Keep on A40 through the town. Turn right at traffic lights after Morrisons and half a mile further on there is a sharp left hand turn. Down the street for 400m you will come to the bus stop at the bottom. Turn into it and keep left to furthest point to park (Pay and Display).
