Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fawr) is the most easterly of Black Mountains hills. Though modest in height (486m), it is steeped in history and legend, with magnificent views. We begin on the Beacons Way by lanes and fields before starting the main ascent through woodland and then the fine ridge to the summit – where there will be time for tales and hopefully a grand vista. Returning towards Abergavenny, we take in our bonus hill, Little Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fach). This used to be tree-covered, but after a recent tonsure, its open top gives fine views of the whole sweep of the Usk valley. A steady descent leads back to the town.
