Walk 03 The Cat's Back and other Ridges

Date: Saturday 9th March
Meeting point: Blaen y Cwm Car Park for bus to start
Grid Ref: SO 252285
Time: 9am to 5pm
Distance: 13 miles
Ascent: 2645ft
Leader: Mike Jones

A strenuous but beautiful walk in the Eastern Black Mountains. It begins with a knife-edge ridge, the Cat's Back, to the trig point at Crib y Garth and then it descends through a gorge into the secluded Olchon valley, before climbing steeply up its east side to Offa’s Dyke. We cross the Offa's Dyke path and descend steeply to the Llanthony Valley, passing the Vision Farm, followed by an easy walk to Capel-y-Ffin. The church there is a gem. The route now rises gently up the beautiful Nant Bwch to the northern escarpment of the Black Mountains and then back south along the ridge to the Blacksmith's Anvil for the descent to Blaen y Cwm.

Directions to Start
Allow 1 hour from CRiC. From the front of CRiC take A40 towards Abergavenny and turn immediately left after the Fire Station up Greenhill Way. Then right at mini roundabout. Follow the road for 3½ miles until, on a right hand bend, you come to a sign for Llanthony along a very narrow lane. Turn left here (effectively straight on!) and continue, following the signs. At first T junction turn right and at “major” intersection (five ways) take first exit (signposted Grwyne Fawr Reservoir 7 miles). Continue along this road for the 7 miles to the Mynydd Du car park on your right.
