Solar Observing at the Blackett Observatory

With clear skies it will be possible to observe the Sun through Solar goggles, Solar scopes, telescopes with white light filters to observe the Photosphere and sunspots (if any present).

Meet at the pedestrian lights opposite the Porters Lodge of the College, on the A4 Bath Road (see map below). Someone will walk with you to the Observatory which is a 10-15 minutes walk uphill on a rough track.
Length of session -  Approx 1 hr including walking to/from the Observatory.
Suitable for 6 years and over - children must be accompanied

If Covid numbers allow, and weather conditions are right, attendees will be able to go into the Observatory in groups of 10 to view the Sun’s inner atmosphere (Chromosphere) through the 10 inch Refractor which is equipped with a Hydrogen-alpha filter. Otherwise the session will be conducted outside the Observatory. What you see will depend on how clear the sky is.
