Vince Jones 2014-2016

Vince Jones is a national treasure. He has set the bar for Australian jazz artists and been recognised internationally across his thirty year, 20 album career. His fans are long term and committed. They appreciate the variety of his repertoire, which is drawn from a love of Afro-American blues, his Celtic roots, the Great American songbook and his own songs which are often co-written with the country’s finest musicians. They also appreciate the vocal risks he takes to be in the moment and that the edge is always near but never crossed.

2015 was a year of renewal. After a lengthy hiatus from touring and recording while teaching at the ANU, he re-connected with his loyal fan base in jazz clubs across the country and was discovered by new audiences on the “Here Comes The Night – Songs From The Van Morrison Songbook” concert tours. His sparse, gentle and instinctive readings of Morrison’s songs were a highlight every night.

Two duet shows with Paul Grabowsky inspired them to record the critically acclaimed “Provenance” album that was released in October through ABCJazz. The album is a stunning example of the unique tone and vocal identification that places him among a handful of the world’s great jazz masters.

Throughout his career, Vince has insisted on working with the cream of the country’s finest musicians and this years annual Australia Day weekend Milton Theatre concert will see him in quartet mode, accompanied by Matt McMahon (piano), James Hauptman (drums) and Brett Hirst (bass).

There is something beguiling about a Vince Jones concert; a gentleness. They’re a bit cheeky; and romantic; and political; and always special. Saturday January 23rd will be no exception. Enjoy!
