Two artists - One show. Miriam Lieberman brings African rhythms and instruments of the world. Chris Gudu brings his irresistible township jive rhythms from his homeland, Zimbabwe.
Miriam Lieberman is a singer songwriter who pulls from the traditions of West African and Latin melodies and rhythms. Miriam accompanies her soulful vocals with the 21 stringed African harp, known as the kora, and percussive styled guitar. Her music is both lyrical and uplifting. She is joined by the gorgeous voices of Kate Adams and Lara Goodridge on cello and violin. Expect rich vocal harmonies and soaring string arrangements.
Despite this unusual mix of pure classical instruments and something made from a large gourd strung with fishing line prepare for a musical journey built of warm melodies and lush harmonies, where West African and Latin flavours accompany heartfelt stories from life. Miriam will be playing songs from her new album (soon to be released) as well as some old favourites.
Chris Gudu, and his band Afro Pamoja, perform up tempo and exuberant music often referred to as Township Jive Music, and a touch of Afro jazz. Township Jive and is better known in Southern Africa as Umbaqanga music which originates from the streets and shebeens of Southern Africa.
Chris Gudu was the co-founder of Matonto, alongside his brother Calvin Gudu, and he is the former leader, bass man and lead singer of the group Jive Kayana, which during its days sold out concerts and created big waves at festivals.
As well as enjoying the success of his own concerts Chris Gudu & Afro Pamoja have toured and shared the stage with some of Africa’s greatest legends such as Hugh Masekela, Angelique Kidjo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo and more.
