Michael Chance, CBE, Director of Grange Festival, accompanied by Natalie Burch
Since opera was invented in Florence in the 1580’s, women have to a certain extent led the progress of the art form, or rather, the portrayal of strong, independent female characters has, from the beginning, been at the heart of many of the best surviving of those early works. This early operatic matriarchy was somewhat eroded in the 19th century. In this class, we examine three powerful women desirous of usurping the social order in a patriarchal world.
