One-man play MONK by Laurence Holder, finds Jazz great American piano player/composer Thelonious Monk in an "afterlife state". Set in his home in San Juan Hill, New York, he revisits his existence from his childhood, until his final days on this earthly plane. The play explores Monk's obsession with Jazz music, the people who influenced him and those who he influenced along the way to becoming a legendary modern Jazz composer and pianist, who wrote classic tunes like :"Round Midnight", "Straight No Chaser" and "Well, You Needn't".

Written by Laurence HolderNew York native and lifetime entertainer Rome Neal has enjoyed an incredible career spanning some 50 years, which includes movies, television, stage and popular Jazz venues. He sits on the Board and is the Artistic Theatre Director of the world famous Nuyorican Poets Café theatre program. Mr. Neal has received numerous awards including the National Black Theatre Festival's coveted Lloyd Richards Director’s Award, The Triumph Award, a Monarch Merit Award for his outstanding contributions in New York Theatre, and the coveted NYC Audelco Awards for, direction, lighting design and for outstanding actor. His most acclaimed projects have been his solo performance in the critically acclaimed "MONK," by Laurence Holder, which has been performed internationally and nationally, and his award winning talent showcase, Rome Neal's Banana Puddin' Jazz, which will celebrate 20 years in 2023. The show had an impressive monthly run at the historic Nuyorican Poets Café and was moved to a streaming online platform during the pandemic. Rome has presented his Rome Neal Shakere Award to some the greatest names in entertainment. He is currently working on the release of “The Black Theatre Project” documentary with his son, film maker Rome Neal. In November Rome was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from New York City's Audelco Award ceremony.
