Monday Art Class - 8 to 13 year olds

Art is healing and therapeutic for children.
It is inspiring, and allows children a different space for free and creative expression. It develops listening and focus skills.
Because children with difficulties in academic subjects might excel at drawing, painting and designing, it develops confidence. Children may not have the language skills to express themselves, but through art they have a voice. It awakens the imagination and is an outlet for emotions. It can develop a social awareness and help us to appreciate individuality.
It develops cognitive function, recognition of real and abstract, understanding patterns, making observations of the world, using the senses and deep thinking. Without realising it, children develop hand eye coordination, improve pencil grip and dexterity and learn about depth and dimension.

We will explore the specific elements of art looking at line, colour, texture, form, pattern, shape, depth and dimension in a fun way!

Alvin and Christine Walenn have spent most of their lives educating children and young people. Alvin was born in Bulawayo Zimbabwe and Christine was born in Scotland but grew up in Bulawayo. They founded a school in 1994 in South Africa, which is still a thriving and creative school today.

Alvin was a training and development manager in the textile industry. He developed a gap year college, training young people in entrepreneurial skills and life skills. He was an army medic and this led him to work with special needs high school students.
Christine majored in fine arts while qualifying as a teacher. She has a long career in teaching children and has taught children with special needs. She loves to make learning fun and uses art, drawing and creative crafts as a therapy to help children learn and to build their self-confidence.
