Writing in ‘The Spectator’, hugh Cecil wrote, “in The Long Sunset, [Sherriff’s] build-up of suspense, as order and humanity break down, is chilling”. Written in 1955, The Long Sunset begs the question: “Is it better to remain part of a large, Europe-wide organisation, or is it better to go it alone?” Although the organisation in question is The Roman Empire rather than the European Union, R C Sherriff’s play addresses issues that are as relevant today as they were when it was first written.
