The Book Shop - Film Picnic Night

Adapted by Isabel Coixet from Penelope Fitzgerald’s 1978 novel, The Bookshop relates the struggles of Florence Green, a young widow, who, by deciding to open a bookshop in a small English town unchains ruthless opposition from local heavyweight, Violet Gamart. It also provokes local Mr. Brundish to emerge from a reclusive life with his books to start a terribly elegant, restrained and flirtatious game with Florence.

An ode to the power of books and a woman’s independence of spirit. The unclassifiable Coixet offers an English tale benefiting hugely from subtle performances by Mortimer, Nighy and (in her third collaboration with the filmmaker) Clarkson. The voiceover by Julie Christie with Alfonso de Vilallonga’s score are wonderful final touches to this film, which in Spain won several awards including the Goyas for Best Film as well as Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay awards for Coixet.
