Haydn’s last major composition, the Harmoniemesse, is a magnificent expression of his optimistic and life-affirming religious faith. It was written shortly after his oratorio The Creation, and it has the same hallmarks of great choral writing, wonderful instrumental cameos, and a thrilling sweep to the finish. It is notable too for the inexhaustible freedom with which he exploits the complementary functions of the four soloists and chorus. Our four professional soloists, Georgie Malcolm, Clare McCaldin, William Searle and James Birchall all have widespread experience in the fields of oratorio and opera.

John Rutter’s popularity as a composer of English choral music continues undimmed, still writing accessible music into his 70s. Singers enjoy the demands he places on them, for his music is seldom as easy as it sounds. Psalmfest, a collection of nine separate movements, displays his superb craftsmanship, resulting in intelligent, imaginative and varied settings of words from the Psalms of David.
