Jazz and Spirituals (22 May 2016)

Slough Philharmonic Society Chorus present a programme of jazz and spirituals. We open with a selection from Will Todd’s Mass in Blue, an upbeat setting of the latin mass for choir, soprano solo and jazz trio.  It is a brilliant blend of driving jazz grooves and clear, strong, choral writing against which the solo piano and solo soprano voice weave and blend in a delightful aural tapestry.

George Shearing’s Shakespeare Songs and Sonnets continue the jazz mood as we explore four songs about love and relationships starting with the cheerful lovers setting out hand in hand, and ending with an ironic take on more established relationships.

We then present a set of spirituals from South Africa, and the audience favourite ‘Amen’ by Jester Hairston, a renowned composer and arranger of gospel music. We conclude with ‘Total Praise’ a classic of modern gospel.

Piano: Jo Hutchins; Bass: James Newman; Drums: Michael Creech; Soprano: Penny Manser
