Shetland Meal Roads

There were no roads in Shetland until the late eighteenth century. During the famine of the 1840s a national agency paid men and women to make roads.
Join James Arnaud, a graduate of Cambridge University as he examines the ideologies behind road construction as a relief project during the Great Highland Famine (1846-50). As well as providing details about the history and geography of the Meal Roads, he will explore how organisations in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London believed they could improve Shetland and the Highlands by making material changes to the landscape.

This talk and exhibition forms part of a wider range of events held to celebrate Scotland's Year of Stories 2022. For more information on what we are doing to celebrate this, please visit here.
