The Music from the Boats that Rocked

Star Pirate Radio DJ Tom Edwards presents an evening of music from the Golden Era of Radio when the BBC was ignoring pop music and the Pirates ruled the airwaves.

Tom has a treasure trove of tales and stories. He was on Radio City in the Thames Estuary in 1966, being on board when the Shivering Sands Fort was 'invaded' over a transmitter dispute and at the time of the shooting dead of Radio City boss – Reg Calvert, in the same dispute. Many believe that it was this lawlessness amongst the 'pirates' which did more than anything to hasten the 1967 Marine Offences Act after which the offshore stations became illegal. Tom later joined Radio Caroline South off the coast of Frinton-on-Sea where he worked with the likes of Tommy Vance, Tony Blackburn, Robbie Dale and Johnnie Walker. Like many other pirate DJ's he has also had spells on Radio 1 and 2 as they sought to recapture the success of the Pirates in the 1970's and 80's.

A multitude of 1960s/70s performers - including THE HONEYCOMBS, the legendary singer TONY BURROWS (Famous for his work with The Ivy League, The Flower Pot Men, White Plains, The Pipkins, Edison Lighthouse, The First Class, Brotherhood of Man) ... and special surprise guests - perform an evening of music from the Golden Era of pirate radio.

A unique mix of chart hits, turntable hits, jingles and especially memories from Radio Caroline & Radio London have all been put together to commemorate 50 years since the Marine Offences Act outlawed and eventually closed down the offshore radio stations. There will also be tributes to the many legendary DJ's who braved the sea as well as the Navy to create a whole new pop music sound: Tony Blackburn, Ed Stewart. Kenny Everett, Dave Cash and John Peel, creator of The Perfumed Garden, to name but a few.

A fun night, with prizes, nostalgia and memory-jerking music. Get ready for ‘We Love the Pirate Stations’, ‘Caroline’, and an incredible playlist of your favourite songs that were played on the pirate stations. A unique, one-off show, never done before - and unlikely ever to be performed again!

The Spirit of the Blitz

Celebrating the best of British wartime entertainment

A tribute to the legendary stars who kept us smiling through our darkest days, Spirit of the Blitz recaptures the patriotic optimism of war-torn Britain. Sing along to swinging hits like Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree, Bless 'Em All, Leaning On A Lamp-Post, and of course, We'll Meet Again. Starring Andy Eastwood, Maggie O’Hara and Pete Lindup, this feel-good show recreates all your forties favourites, including Vera Lynn, George Formby, Max Miller, Bing Crosby, Anne Shelton and Gracie Fields... A truly heart-warming feast of live music and laughter. For those who remember the war years, Spirit Of The Blitz is a trip down memory lane; for those who don't, it’s a Sentimental Journey back through time to the glorious melodies and good clean comedy that accompanied the nation's 'finest hour'.

The Cast

Andy Eastwood is very familiar with the songs of the war years, having portrayed George Formby in over a thousand performances of the touring show We’ll Meet Again. He was the only musician ever to gain his Oxford degree playing the ukulele, and is one of the world’s foremost exponents of the instrument. He is also a violin virtuoso, as you will see in the show’s patriotic finale!

Maggie O’Hara delights with her superb vocal talents, in tributes to the legendary “forces’ sweetheart” Dame Vera Lynn, cheery Lancashire lass Gracie Fields and sultry songstress Anne Shelton. With such versatility it’s no wonder that this lady has forged an award-winning international career in theatre and cabaret.

Pete Lindup, armed with trumpet, trombone, a jazzy suit and a wealth of wit, has worked alongside many of the great names of the variety stage. He will recall the great comedians Max Miller and Robb Wilton amongst others, and is an expert entertainer in true vaudeville style.

A variety show would be incomplete without a live band, so our multi-talented musicians Martyn St James and Phil Jeffery are on hand to accompany the whole proceedings.

Buddy Holly's Winter Dance Party

In January 1959 Buddy Holly began a string of dates across the American mid-west. 'The Winter Dance Party Tour' included Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Dion and the Belmonts and of course Buddy himself. 58 years on from what was to prove to be Buddy, Ritchie and the Boppers' final concerts we are delighted to present a celebration of their music which brings all of those unforgettable stars back together.

This show will take you back to one of the most hit-packed rock and roll tours ever. From the early songs such as Buddy's 'Blue Days Black Nights' and 'Rock Around with Ollie Vee' to 'True Love Ways' and 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore'. Then the Big Bopper's 'Chantilly Lace', 'Running Bear' and 'White Lightning'. Ritchie's 'La Bamba', 'Come On Lets Go', 'Donna' and Dion's 'The Wanderer', 'Runaround Sue', 'I Wonder Why' and 'Teenager In Love' this will have you off your seat from start to finish.

All the music is performed by real musicians in authentic 50's attire on real instruments, and with all the main characters faithfully portrayed. No backing tracks here! The attention to detail will have you believeing that you are back in 1959. You will actually see how Buddy recorded songs such as 'Everyday' where the drums were replaced by the drummer slapping his knees and 'Not Fade Away' (No the 'Stones' didn't write it!) being performed again not on the drums but this time on a cardboard box! An Acknowledgement is made to the influence of Elvis on Buddy when we are treated to a short medley of Elvis songs that Buddy himself recorded. The expertise of the 'Counterfeit Crickets' double bass player at this point never fails to gain a standing ovation from the awe struck audience

This show, led by Buddy The Musical star Marc Robinson and supported by The Counterfeit Crickets, conclusively proves that the music did not die but lives on and is as vibrant and relevant as ever.

T.Rextasy Marc Bolan 40th Anniversary Tour

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. It’s hard to believe that 40 years have now passed since Marc’s tragic fatal car accident and fans have mourned the loss of a truly individual, inspirational talent ever since. Bolan's special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs including '20th Century Boy’, ‘Get in On’ and 'I Love to Boogie' have insured that Marc Bolan and T.Rex have become one of the most memorable and enduring bands of the seventies

T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for an incredible 25 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex.  They have become widely accepted as the world’s only official tribute show dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc’s family, estate and catalogue management, not to mention original members of T.Rex. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’.

This year T.Rextasy are celebrating Marc’s life and works with a very special commemorative tour. Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages - If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you!
