Sonata for Fortepiano & Violin in A, K.526 (1787) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Violin Sonata No,5 in F, Op.24 (1801) Spring Sonata Ludwig van Beethoven
Raffle Prize: A litre bottle of vodka
Little is known about the circumstances surrounding the composition of the A major Sonata, K. 526, other than that it was written in August 1787 in Vienna during the composition of
Don Giovanni. Whilst Mozart himself was an accomplished violinist, there is no evidence that he wrote it with himself in mind. Contrasting this, Beethoven's Violin Sonata in F major Opus 24 was an relatively early work, written only about 13 years after the Mozart, being published in 1801 and is dedicated to one of Beethoven’s patrons Moritz von Fries. The name “Spring Sonata” was not given to this work until after Beethoven’s death. However the title indicates the beauty of this work and the qualities of spring that can be heard throughout.
