The action takes place in a train compartment, en route to Frankfurt, the characters alternately revealing their thoughts to the audience – but not to each other. The man is a successful novelist. His latest work – ‘The Unexpected Man’ – is currently being read by the woman. She has the book in her bag and is uncertain whether to get it out, and then whether to reveal that she recognises him or to pretend that she doesn’t.
