After a successful 2015/16 season with packed houses and enthusiastic feedback, Fruit tree returns to The Acorn. This time the main auditorium will be transformed into an atmospheric cabaret venue with Fruit Tree’s superb acoustic sound.
The 2017 harvest showcases talent from Truro and Falmouth as well as Penzance giving the potential for some cross-pollination between Cornish music scenes. We also welcome back some familiar faces with new material.
For our Spring outing Graham Smith brings ‘Open Fire Light’, a trio with Alyssa Lynch and Mal Darwen. Expect a warm sound with edge, and classic song writing in a folk and country style. Truro based vocalist and guitarist Hannah Bullock will give a solo performance of her intimate songs, whilst duo ‘The Brytevibes’ head over from Falmouth brimming with feel good jazzy grooves.
OPEN FIRE LIGHT
From the age of twenty,
Graham Smith was a session harmonica player with such greats as Al Stewart, Eric Clapton, Cat Stevens, Alan Price, Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Harry Nilsson, and that is just a snippet from a prolific career and life in music. Graham has been writing songs for an amazing fifty years and says it is still his ‘favourite thing to do’.
Mal Darwen plays in world music band
Praying for the Rain with artists from India, Africa and South America, touring internationally.
Alyssa Lynch is a violinist and teacher and plays with her brother Jethro in duo ‘Ekohead’.
THE BRYTEVIBES
Lou Peixinha and
Steve Gruitt of ‘The Brytevibes’ first met as members of ‘The Wild Zellas’. In 2016 they started to write together and develop a sound which effortlessly picks up influences from jazz and folk through to punk and hip hop, running the gauntlet between smooth and edgy. Steve’s poppy vocals, drum machines and funky guitar, are perfectly complimented by ethereal flute playing and crystal vocals from Lou. Together they manage to somehow to distil something of what pop music is all about.
HANNAH BULLOCK
Earthy sounds and powerful lyrics blend stories of light and dark in Hannah’s intimate songs. She sees her songwriting as a form of ‘alchemy’, taking emotions such as loss and fear, strength and joy, and turning them into something honest and beautiful which strikes a chord with the listener.
Beyond her own experiences, she has drawn inspiration from solo female singers such as Joan Armatrading and PJ Harvey.
