Alan Johnson

Saturday 14 October - 5.30 pm  SOLD OUT

Interviewed by Jackie Long

The Long and Winding Road

The rise of Alan Johnson from condemned slums in West London to the most senior jobs in Parliament is surprising, life-affirming and a testament to hard work and determination.  But hard work did not dampen Alan’s love of The Beatles, as the titles of his award-winning autobiographies testify.

In this third volume, The Long and Winding Road (best memoir by a Parliamentarian in 2016), Alan recounts his early political skirmishes as a trades union leader, and how he came to the notice of Tony Blair and other senior figures. His honesty and authenticity - words not normally associated with politicians- are entrancing.  Alan stood down as an MP in 2017.

This Boy won the RSL Ondaatje prize and Orwell Prize in 2013, Please Mister Postman won Autobiography of the Year 2014 and The Long and Winding Road won best memoir by a Parliamentarian (2016).

Alan is being interviewed by Jackie Long, presenter and social affairs editor of Channel 4 news.  Previously Jackie was at the BBC, where she spent more than a decade on Newsnight.
