Poppyland Songs: Life On A Cliff Edge

Bertie Anderson Haggart, AKA Bertie Bow is best known as lead singer and songwriter in English folk swing band The BeauBowBelles and Musical Director and performer in the award-winning theatrical, musical comedy string group Bowjangles.

Winner of the Norfolk Arts Awards 2022 music award, ‘Poppyland Songs’ is a heart-warming musical tapestry exploring and celebrating the history & lives of ordinary folk living on a cliff edge in North Norfolk known as ‘Poppyland’. Inspired by 100-year-old journals belonging to her great-great-aunt and with the support from Arts Council England, Bertie has gathered stories & memories from people past & present in Poppyland and composed a song cycle.
The live performance is part concert, part history lesson, part community engagement. She encourages audience participation through group singing and invites people to share their own stories and memories. Despite her source material being drawn from just a few miles of land in North Norfolk, the history, and stories she has uncovered will be relatable to many rural communities in England.
