A New Work For Electric Guitar Orchestra by Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil)
In ‘The Colour Wheel’, Jim Moginie’s Electric Guitar Orchestra, with live painters creating a colour wheel alongside, explore the attempts over history to prove the connection between music and colour, or synaesthesia –examining the work of Kandinsky, Klee, Schoenberg, and Bowral born artist, Roy De Maistre.
In the early years of the 20th Century there were terrific advances in physics with The Special and General Theories of Relativity and the advent of Quantum Mechanics, uncovering the very building blocks of matter which totally changed the way in which humans observed the world. Around the same time, a similar revolution took place in both Music and Art, along with a desire to deconstruct formality and structure in art and music.
The Colour Wheel will be performed live by Jim Moginie and an ensemble of electric guitar players including Kent Steedman (Celibate Rifles), Michael Trifunovic (Aqualash), Tim Kevin (Youth Group, La Huva, The Exiles), Matthew Steffen (Decoder Ring, La Huva) and Alex Young (Good Buddha). Several artists will be at work painting a colour wheel during the performance.
Jim Moginie’s twenty-five year contribution to Midnight Oil cannot be under-stated, songwriter musician and vocalist in a blistering band which pioneered new ground, inflamed passions and challenged social justice and environmental concepts. Midnight Oil produced fourteen studio albums plus their most recent release, Essential Oils. Eleven ARIAs, an induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the two songs – Beds Are Burning andPower and the Passion are on the APRA Best Songs of All Time list. Moginie’s projects include touring/recording two albums with The Break, a surf/space/rock themed outfit whose members are ex-Midnight Oil, Violent Femmes and Hunters & Collectors, his folk band, Shameless Seamus and a solo debut album, Alas Folkloric. Jim has also recently toured here and in the U.S.A. and Canada as guest player with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

These new songs/works were written with the assistance of Campbelltown City Council through Campbelltown Arts Centre’s 2014 Contemporary Music Program where Moginie is this year’s artist in residence.
