Richard Strauss was inspired for much of his career by his wife, the soprano Pauline de Ahna. For their marriage in 1894, Strauss composed four of his most beautiful songs as a wedding gift for her, including the famous Morgen. Even after her retirement, Strauss credited his wife with being the ‘muse’ for several of his operatic works. With Lucy Walker.
