From Provence to Paris: 150 Years of Bizet and Ravel
This recital for saxophone and piano celebrates the 150th anniversary of Georges Bizet and Maurice Ravel, two of France's most iconic composers. Featuring works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the program showcases the rich tapestry of French music.
Invented by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in the early 1840s, the saxophone was brought to France when Sax moved to Paris in 1842 to introduce his new creation. The instrument quickly became an integral part of French musical innovation, serving as a valid representative of French history.
By performing these compositions on saxophone and piano, we pay homage to Bizet and Ravel, linking their enduring legacies with the saxophone's own journey. From the sun-soaked melodies inspired by Provence—through works by composers like Darius Milhaud—to the sophisticated harmonies of Paris, the recital embodies the essence of "From Provence to Paris," guiding listeners through a sonic exploration of France's diverse musical landscapes.
