Threads in Motion: A Moving Tribute to the Mount Felix Tapestry Project

We’re delighted to share Erica’s vibrant animation work, inspired by Panel 30 of the Mount Felix Tapestry in this year's Riverhouse Christmas Show. This panel captures the heart-warming spirit of a Christmas party held on Ward 5 in 1916, a moment of joy and festivity amidst the challenges of wartime.

Using a wonderful photograph from that day as inspiration, Panel 30 celebrates a truly special occasion. Christmas 1916 was an extraordinary feast for the patients and staff at Mount Felix Hospital, with a sumptuous menu of turkey, beef, ham, plum pudding, mince pies, fruits, and sweets – all accompanied by a bottle of beer! Every one of the 1,000 patients received gifts from the War Contingent Association, while an afternoon concert, a Christmas tree, billiards, music, and a lively three-act comedy, A Soldier’s Dream, made the day unforgettable.

Erica’s animations bring Andrew Crummy's original tapestry design, volunteer stitcher Sharon Taylor's intricate embroidery, and these festive scenes to life, blending the nostalgia of this historical moment with her creative flair. Her work invites you to step into the joy and camaraderie of that Christmas celebration, weaving together the threads of history with a contemporary touch.

Also on display will be seasonal artwork from children attending "Our Artclub" - an Elmbridge based after school art club for primary aged children.
