Schubert’s Sonata, written in Steyr in 1819, is sunny and lyrical and with an Andante which seems to reflect for the first time in Schubert, the mystical feeling for nature that inspires his greatest and most charismatic compositions. Mozart’s C Major Sonata was one of several piano sonatas written in Paris in 1778. It appears light but it is a masterpiece and one of the most lovable works Mozart ever wrote. After the interval you will hear a Mozart Quartet with Oboe solo and String Trio. The composer Dittersdorf, who had taken part in quartet parties with Mozart, spoke of the “extreme, unrelenting cleverness” of the quartets. The Flute Quartets are richly devised with details and a simple theme. But the G Major Quartet has sharp dynamic contrasts which add rhythm and colour.
