Ventnor Fringe 2022: VENTNOR - CRADLE OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION (SOLD OUT)

During the Ventnor Fringe in July 2022, Stephan Roman, author of Isle and Empires, will be leading four guided walks around Ventnor in collaboration with staff from the Ventnor Heritage Museum and with the support of Medina Publishing.

These walks will explore the fascinating story of Ventnor’s connection with many of the nineteenth century Russian radicals, writers and poets who opposed Russian imperialism and laid the foundations for the Russian Revolution of 1917. Between 1855-1888 Ventnor became a laboratory for an alternative liberal Russia, and many of the political and literary ideas developed in those years would eventually contribute to the destruction of the Romanov Imperial regime. The walk will also cover the history of Ventnor in the nineteenth century and explain why it became such a fashionable summer retreat for people from all over Britain and Europe. The walk begins in front of the Winter Gardens and ends at the Ventnor Heritage Museum. It lasts two hours and includes a short steep section of hill walking and so is not suitable for people with disability issues.

An updated edition of Stephan Roman’s popular book Isle and Empires : Romanov Russia, Britain and the Isle of Wight was published by Medina Publishing in April 2022. The author ran a series of walks at last year’s Fringe, and these were all over subscribed. Please make sure that you book early to secure tickets for the 2022 walks. Tickets will be sold through the Fringe Office. Copies of the new updated edition of the book are available from the Ventnor Heritage Museum and also from Medina Publishing and Bookshop in Cowes www.medinabookshop.com
