Histoire du soldat, published in 1918 is an hour-long theatrical work to be read, played and danced. The music is by Igor Stravinsky and the English libretto by Flanders and Black. Essentially a cautionary tale, a soldier on leave from the army meets the Devil in disguise who persuades him to trade his old violin for a magic book that can make him rich. As is the nature of many fables, the consequences of consorting with the Devil are soon revealed.
