u3a Monthly Meeting 6th Nov 2024 - u3a AGM + Talk on Satellite Imaging

The first part of our meeting this morning will be our u3a's Annual General Meeting, chaired for the last time by Hugh Thomas who retires at this meeting.
Following the AGM, our talk this month will be:

Monitoring the Environment from Space OR Satellite Imaging isn't just Pretty Pictures! by Dr Robin Wilson
Hundreds of satellites orbit the Earth every day, collecting data that is used for monitoring almost all aspects of the environment.  This talk will introduce to you the world of satellite imaging, take you beyond the 'pretty pictures' to the scientific data behind them, and show you how the data can be applied to monitor plant growth, air pollution and more.

Dr Robin Wilson is an expert in satellite imaging, having won the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society's PhD Prize for his thesis in 2014.  Afterwards he worked in academia but is now a freelance geospatial software engineer, working for clients ranging from small community groups to multi-national corporations to store, process and visualise geographic data such as satellite images and maps.

Today's timetable is slightly longer than usual: 10am coffee, 10.30 meeting starts with AGM, followed by our talk which will end before 1200.
Please remember that these meetings are for Odiham u3a members only; please don't invite your own guests as this may deprive a member of a seat.
